Apply for GST registration online with the help of our simple steps and guidance in this article on how to register GST online, GST registration when applied after following established and efficient processes considerable time can be saved along with high success.
Step 1 -Conduct a preliminary check of the following
Make sure that there are no pending defaults for previous GST registration, this can be checked by searching on search GST dealer or taxpayer functionality using PAN option GST portal.
A list of active GST no and cancelled GST numbers will be displayed and further details like pending returns to be filed, and mode of cancellation can be obtained which will be helpful to first clear pending defaults before the new GST registration application.
Ascertain the type of registration required as normal dealer or composition dealer, after computation of the effect on the profitability of these two options.
Step 2 Prepare essential documents and details
This is the initial and core step for GST registration, it is advisable to make sure all the documents and details required are prepared and arranged before processing the application.

It is advisable to start application of online GST registration only after all documents are available.
Step 3 Filling up GST registration online application
- Log on to https://reg.gst.gov.in/registration/ select option as new registration
- Fill brief address details, PAN number, name as per PAN permanent e-mail ID and permanent mobile no in the TRN generation form.
- Once Name as per PAN is validated on clicking Proceed button window will pop up with existing registration based on PAN number, as we had already completed preliminary check click on proceed for generation of mobile and e-mail OTP.
- On successful OTP validation, a TRN number will be generated and same will be sent to registered e-mail ID and mobile no.
- Now login to https://reg.gst.gov.in/registration/ using Temporary reference number option using OTP received on mobile no or e-mail ID.
Tab 1 – “ Business details” enter the following
- Fill business name in trade name field in case no business name enter name as same as legal name of business in the form.
- Constitution as proprietorship/ partnership/ private limited company, which ever is applicable.
- In case the same vertical of business is done using more than one business name, add additional trade name for addition of all other business names.
- If composition scheme is required, select the option to choose sub category of composition taxpayer.
- Select reason to apply online GST registration based on compulsory GST registration rules or optional GST registration as applicable, e.g. : crossing the threshold or voluntary registration, interstate supply etc.
- Enter date of commencement of business as actual, for avoiding practical difficulties in future it is advisable to enter the date prior to the date of opening a current account in the name of business if a current account is already opened.
- Enter date on which liability to register as per the provisions contained in section 22 or section 24 of CGST act.
- In indicate existing registration field, add details of all the registration listed.
Tab – Promoters/ partners
- Enter KYC details of proprietor, partner or director as per Aadhaar, select the option Also Authorised signatory for proprietor, and for partnership firm and private limited select this option only for a person on whose favour authorisation letter is signed by all partners or directors respectively.
Tab – Principal place of business
- Add Business address as per rental agreement
- Fill up state and central jurisdiction based on location of business address, in most cases state jurisdiction is autopopulated or more than one option will be displayed, in such a situation it is advisable to select correct state jurisdiction for quick approval. For example, in case of GST registration in Chennai KK nagar, state jurisdiction should be KK nagar and central jurisdiction will be Chennai south Vadapalani division and range III. Input of correct data is crucial for approval of GST registration application by concerned officer. In case if this field is wrongly selected, the process is complicated to change after submission of application.
- In nature of possession of premises on selection first option, second option drop down will be enabled with available additional supporting documents, which is also discussed in our documents required for GST registration article.
- In Nature of Business Activity being carried out at above-mentioned premises, select applicable brief nature of business as provided.
Tab – Additional places of business
- If there is any branches address are required to be added, option of additional places to be enabled in principal places of business tab, enter branch details as you had entered principal place of business.
Tab – Goods and services
- Add up to 5 HSN code and 5 SAC code applicable to your business
- Where there is more than 5 category of products or services, it is recommended to add 5 top products contributing to the sales.
Tab – Aadhaar Authentication
Enable Aadhaar Authentication option if Aadhaar is linked to mobile no and name as per PAN and Aadhaar is same.
Tab – Verification
Kindly recheck all the filled up tabs once before proceeding to verification once the application is verified using OTP, we cannot make any changes, and it is assigned for further processing.
Step 4 – Tracking application status
- Once the application is submitted using OTP, if application is validated anyone of the following situation will happen based on option of Aadhaar authentication.
- If Aadhaar authentication is opted, ARN will be generated only after successful completion of Aadhaar authentication with in 15 days from the date of submission of GST registration application.
- If Aadhaar authentication is not completed with in 15 days of submission of GST application, ARN number will be generated and application will be processed after physical verification by the officer.
- If Aadhaar authentication is not opted, ARN will be generated immediately after submission of GST application and GST application will be processed after physical verification of business premises.
- Once ARN is generated, track the application status on https://services.gst.gov.in/services/trackstatus using ARN number generated.
- In case of any query raised, the same will be communicated to provided m e-mail ID for business.
- If a query is received, it is recommended to submit the required information and make necessary corrections as soon as possible to avoid rejection of application at the last minute.
Step 5 – Downloading Registration certificate.
On approval of GST registration application, user ID and password will be sent to registered e-mail ID.
Login to https://services.gst.gov.in/services/login and click on first time login section at bottom and permanent user ID and password.
Note down user ID and password generated for future use.
Download GST registration certificate from profile section.
